Meebo itself is a great web application that allows you to easily log into all your favorite IM services from the web, so having a desktop client for it might seem like a rather odd choice at first. However, it actually turns out to be quite a useful tool. What Meebone basically does is display the Meebo web app in an AIR window, somewhat akin to what Fluid does on the Mac. Meebone sets itself apart from other IM clients like Pidgin, Digsby, or Trillium, by supporting Meebo Rooms, which were launched this January. frederic lardinois Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts As we reported in March, Meebo is becoming more and more of a mainstream application and chances are that quite a few users are using it on their desktops already and not just on the go, so having a desktop client for it actually makes sense for a lot of users. It effectively clones the look and feel of the web app, so even novice users will feel right at home with Meebone. While it might not be a good choice for IM power users, Meebone would be a great choice for those who are looking for a basic IM client that can handle multiple accounts and services. rieva lesonsky A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Working virtually sounds like heaven to many startups. After all, not having a central office staffed with employees saves money on rent, utilities, parking, etc., freeing you to invest in research, development or marketing. On the other hand, operating virtually is no panacea. Before you make the virtual leap, you need to figure out exactly what working virtually means to your business. The concept of virtual work has many names, from telecommuting and teleworking to distributed companies and remote workers. And virtual companies can be structured in several ways:1. Lead a distributed workforce, consisting of full- and part-time employees, independent contractors or some combination, all working out of their respective homes.2. Operate out of an office space (either your own or shared). You allow your staff to split their time between working at the office and working at home.3. Be the only actual employee of your company. When you need something done, you outsource it to freelancers and independent contractors. Thanks to improvements in broadband and collaboration technology, the ranks of virtual workers are swelling. According to the latest (albeit a little dated) numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2010:• 64.2% of self-employed and contract employees worked at home• 25.8% of part-time employees worked from their homes.Good for young and old companiesWhile it obviously makes sense for brand-new startups to begin virtually, the concept also works for existing startups that began life in more traditional offices. My own company – GrowBiz Media – did just that. We leased space for about 18 months before realizing we could save many thousands of dollars by working from our homes.Even established businesses can benefit from virtual arrangements. Matthew Goldstein founded Idea Consulting about 12 years ago, but the company went virtual about seven months ago. The firm’s 53 freelancers and part-timers are now happily collaborating on a huge project, the EuraMedia 2012 summit, while scattered across the United States, the United Kingdom and Russia. But Goldstein admits: “We are still making mistakes.” His biggest hurdle was finding high-quality virtual workers.“The majority of the people we found were not qualified and overcharged,” he explains.Goldstein also found that, despite what the virtual job placement agencies he worked with (Odesk and Elance) promised, “There is very little accountability” when it comes to contractors. You may not be satisfied with the completed work, but since the placement companies get a commission, “they tend to always side with the contractor.”So how can you make virtual work fly at your company?“You must put in systems of accountability that replicate those of a brick and mortar office,” advises Goldstein. “There needs to be constant monitoring, incentives and penalties, and strict management.” Also key is finding the right technology to make your project work. “Collaborative sites like Basecamp are great for helping to engage workers and get them to collaborate,” says Goldstein.Ask the ExpertSara Sutton Fell, CEO and founder of FlexJobs, a website for flexible jobs, offers more tips for virtual startups:• Plan ahead. If you want to take a physical business virtual, you first have to think about all the facets of your business and how you envision them continuing to run virtually. What will this change mean for outside stakeholders — clients and partners? How can you make sure the transition goes smoothly for everyone? Sometimes the best way to go virtual is gradually, transitioning existing staff to home offices [or adding contractors] in small increments, so that your clients and partners barely notice the changes.• Think about the technologies (computers, software, services, phones, etc.) that are essential for working virtually. Security and usability are two big concerns for teleworkers. You want to make sure everyone can access important information securely and easily, using reliable technology. Sometimes [usually] your workers’ home computers just won’t cut it. If possible, provide remote employees with a complete suite of required hardware, such as laptops, monitors, scanner/copiers, webcams, microphones and more. If you use independent contractors, don’t give them equipment, it can raise questions with the IRS.• Consider communication services. When you’re managing a remote team, it’s vitally important to keep everyone communicating with each other. This helps keep people on task, reduces feelings of isolation and boosts engagement. Employing a wide range of collaboration tools like Yammer, instant messaging (IM), email, Join.Me andSkypecan help keep everyone in the loop.Technology isn’t everything. Schedule regular meetings (at least weekly). It’s also helpful to create channels and leave time for virtual water-cooler conversations to let the team connect and build camaraderie and trust informally. No matter what you do, don’t expect an overnight transition. “Working virtually is not easy,“” Goldstein says, “and you must be ready to put aside at least three months to track people and test them out before you can count on truly developing a team.”Image courtesy of Shutterstock. A zebrafish facility at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology. A budding new Japanese graduate school backed by the likes of Nobel laureates Sydney Brenner, Susumu Tonegawa, Jerome Friedman, and others has cleared the last hurdle required to start teaching. Earlier today Japan’s cabinet officially approved the law formally recognizing the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) Graduate University. The school will welcome its first batch of students in September 2012. Proposed in 2001, OIST started operations as a research institute in 2005 with a handful of scientists working in borrowed space, with Brenner serving as president and a board of governors stacked with scientific luminaries, including five Nobel laureates. OIST supporters, including domestic politicians and scientists, want to shake up Japan’s universities by creating a new academic model emphasizing interdisciplinary research. It is also attempting to attract non-Japanese faculty members by using English for teaching and administrative affairs. The OIST Graduate University will start its academic years in September, instead of in April as is Japanese custom, to be more in sync with international norms. The institute is also charged with boosting the economy of Okinawa, Japan’s least developed prefecture. Jonathan Dorfan, a physicist and former director of what is now the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in Menlo Park, California, becomes the university’s first president on 1 November when the enabling law takes effect. But he has been on the job as president-elect since July 2010, overseeing the development of curriculum and the push to complete faculty recruitment. OIST claims to have attracted numerous academics at the top of their fields from institutions in Japan, the United States, and Europe. Meanwhile in spring 2010, OIST moved to its permanent home—a hillside campus in the village of Onna with stunning views of the East China Sea hosting a collection of buildings designed by Kornberg Associates, a San Diego-based firm headed by Kenneth Kornberg, the son and brother of Nobel laureates. Dorfan’s next challenge will be convincing students he really is turning this subtropcal tourist destination into a haven for education and research. Patna: Bihar Assembly was adjourned on Tuesday as the opposition parties shouted slogans demanding the resignation of Health minister Mangal Pandey over the deaths of more than 150 children due to acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) in the state. As the House assembled at 11 am for its business, RJD leader Lalit Yadav demanded the resignation of the Health minister holding him responsible for children deaths in Muzaffarpur and other parts of the state due to AES. Speaker Vijay Kumar Choudhary asked the opposition leaders that the House had a debate on the serious issue on Monday, followed by the state government’s reply on the issue. Choudhary said that he had allowed the adjournment motion on the important issue of children’s deaths from AES but it seemed that you (opposition MLAs) are adamant on the resignation of the minister by disrupting the House proceedings. The opposition MLAs did not paid heed to the Speaker’s request to let the House carry out it’s normal business of Question Hour and rushed to the well of the House raising slogans against Health minister Mangal Pandey and demanding his resignation. Parliamentary Affairs minister Shravan Kumar also said that the state government gave the reply after the debate on Monday. Health minister and Chief minister also spoke during government’s reply on Monday and now they (opposition) just want disrupt the proceedings of the House and don’t want to let the members raise the issues of public importance. NEW DELHI: The BJP has done nothing for the residents of unauthorised colonies except insult them, Delhi Minister Gopal Rai said on Thursday, after the saffron party alleged that the AAP government was ‘fooling’ the people on the issue. The labour minister also sought to know from the BJP what it had done to regularise such colonies when it was in power from 1993 to 1998. Rai’s remark came after senior BJP leader Vijay Goel, during a protest on Thursday at Jantar Mantar, accused Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of “misleading” the people on regularisation of unauthorised colonies. It is for the first time in its history that the BJP has held a dharna for the residents of unauthorised colonies. Otherwise, it has only insulted the people of such colonies,” Rai said. Also Read – After eight years, businessman arrested for kidnap & murder”In 1993, the BJP came to power in Delhi and had three chief ministers within its five-year term. I want to ask what did it do then for the regularisation of unauthorised colonies? Nothing,” he said. The BJP should leave the work of unauthorised colonies to the AAP and the Kejriwal government, Rai said, asking the saffron party to do two important tasks — provide safety and ensure cleanliness in the national capital. The Delhi Police comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs and mayors of all three municipal corporations in the city are from the BJP. During the protest, which was also attended by Lok Sabha MPs Hans Raj Hans and Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, Goel attacked the AAP and the Congress, saying, both the parties did nothing to regularise unauthorised colonies during their respective tenures.
Long before the tragic murders that shattered their peace occurred, Deborah and Dy-Shawn Simpkins were committed to providing kids with alternatives to street violence via their after-school and day care programs. For over 15 years the couple has supported upwards of 650 youth through these services. Despite their devoted efforts, a senseless act of violence took the lives of their own son, Dy-Shawn Simpkins Jr., 18, along with their nephew Kee-Ayre Griffin, 29, who were killed in a triple shooting in East Orange. The senseless murders interrupted the promising lives of Simpkins, Jr — with his athletic career at Norfolk State University; and of Griffin — a former student athlete at Temple University. Now everyone is asked to participate in a march with the core message — the Love and Not Hate March & Movement. Organized by Simpkins’s own nonprofit of seven years, the GAP Program (Gang Alternative Program), and other nonprofits collectively known as Community United As One. The group, along with the title sponsor, East Orange City Council, will use the march as a kickoff to an annual event that brings awareness to the ongoing violence epidemic.Part of the march will culminate in a musical segment where Dy-Shawn Simpkins, Sr. will perform the song, “Seeds in the Field” that he recorded with his son before the tragedy. To bring enlightenment to the march, Al Sharpton has been invited to join the Simpkins on a lineup of pastors and political luminaries that include: Ted Green Council President and newly elected Mayor of East Orange, NJ, Reverend Timothy Huff, Irvington Mayor Tony Vauss, and Pastor Jerry Smith. Set to host the event is rap icon Vinnie Brown aka Uncle Vinnie from Grammy award winning hip hop trio Naughty by Nature. The march will commence on Saturday, August 12th at 8:00 am with the start beginning at Hollywood Ave & Central Ave in East Orange, NJ. Casablanca – The Minister of Health, Mr. El Houssaine Louardi, has recently announced the discovery of expired medications in Casablanca, dating back to 1973.The Minister announced this shocking news on Tuesday, March 18, before the House of Representatives.“These expired drugs jeopardize the lives of citizens, and thus necessitate urgent intervention,” he noted. “The fact that we (the Ministry of Health) are the last to learn of these expired drugs makes us appear unqualified in the eyes of citizens, especially the beneficiaries of the RAMED plan,” added the Minister. The expired drugs were discovered in public hospitals in Casablanca. In his intervention before the House of Representatives, Mr. Louardi stated, “MAD 2.2 million are spent annually on buying drugs, but because of dysfunctions during the process of storage and distribution, the beneficiaries of RAMED do not benefit from these medications, although it is a right guaranteed by the law.”The Minister advocated entrusting private rather than public companies with the mission of storing and distributing drugs. The Minister also stated that the Ministry of Health does not check the price registered during the inspection of pharmacies, which means that some products may be marketed before their approval.© Morocco World News.
